Committee for the Creation of a Charter
We, the nations of the world, in the name of peace, freedom, and human rights do found this organization to resolve international disputes and promote global security.
Article I Purpose and General Provisions
Section 1 The purposes of the Nations of the World are:
Section 2 All people shall be entitled to all rights and freedoms set forth in this charter, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
Article I Purpose and General Provisions
Section 1 The purposes of the Nations of the World are:
- To maintain international peace and security amongst it's members, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention of threats to the peace, the suppression of acts of aggression, and to bring about by peaceful means, and employing the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes which might lead to a breach of the peace;
- To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principles of equal rights and self-determination, and to other appropriate measures to strengthen global peace; and
- To achieve international cooperation in solving worldwide problems of economic, social, cultural, Scientific, or humanitarian character; in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights; and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to culture, sex, or religious belief.
- Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of their life. In countries which have not abolished the death penalty, sentence of death may be imposed only in accordance with the law in force at the time of the commission of the crime and can only be carried out pursuant to a final judgement rendered by a competent court.
- No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave-trade in all their forms shall be prohibited. This shall not be held to preclude, in countries where imprisonment with hard labour may be imposed as a punishment for a crime, the performance of hard labour in pursuance of a sentence to such punishment by a competent court.
- Everyone shall have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This right shall include freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of choice, and freedom, either individually or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in worship, observance, practice and teaching. No one shall be subject to coercion which would impair the freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of their choice. Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs may be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary to protect public safety, order, health, or morals or the fundamental rights and freedoms of others.
- Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference and the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice. The exercise of the right carries with it special duties and responsibilities. It may therefore be subject to certain restrictions, but these shall only be such as are provided by law and are necessary for respect of the rights or reputations of others and for the protection of national security or of public order, or of public health or morals.

Central Texas proposes this right;
Every Human being shall have the right to practice their religion as long as it doesn't harm anyone physically. And they Shall not be persecuted for this religion. Nations may still have State religions but these Nations must provide religious intolerance.

Re: Committee for the Creation of a Charter
So, gentlemen, since the founding of this region this is what has been achieved on the construction of a charter.
Can we agree on this next
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave-trade in all their forms shall be prohibited. This shall not be held to preclude, in countries where imprisonment with hard labour may be imposed as a punishment for a crime, the performance of hard labour in pursuance of a sentence to such punishment by a competent court.

OOC: It doesn't say anything along the line of "States shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" it only says, essentially, people shall be allowed to believe what they wish.

How does this second right differ from a freedom of conscience?

Re: Committee for the Creation of a Charter
The one about conscience refers more to freedom of religion. While the new one is more of free speech, and freedom of information.

Re: Committee for the Creation of a Charter
Freedom of Conscience: noun
the right to follow one’s own beliefs in matters of religion and morality.
http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/freedom-of-conscience
Freedom of Opinion = freedom of the press essentially. It is the right to have an opinion and publicize it.

Re: Committee for the Creation of a Charter
If you guys want to, I'm up for it. I've just been trying to keep this area to the "minimum" needed to avoid gross oppression but trying not to infringe on national sovereignty also.

Do we wish to guarantee a right to a competent jury and to a good defense council?

Re: Committee for the Creation of a Charter
Exploring wikipedia Trial by Jury doesn't seem to be a universal concept, even in countries one would think of as liberal democracies. Some have just completely abolished the system, some only have jury trials for the most serious crimes, some use a system of professional judges and "lay judges" to represent the public. The only places where it seems to truly universally apply are in former English colonies.

Re: Committee for the Creation of a Charter
Technically speaking we have yet to decide on a common world history. I am still in favor of the CU taking over the world making states then dissolving like the USSR. Followed by a few wars of course......so how about for now we just guarantee no cruel or unusual punishments. Like being stoned for being gay.....yes I am looking at you Iran....
